ONE OF THE MOST COMMON JOB SITE INJURIES RELATING TO CONCRETE PUMPING IS HOSE WHIP. Hose whip happens when air becomes trapped, pressurized, & then violently releases at the outlet of a concrete pumping hose. THERE ARE 2 COMMON WAYS AIR GETS TRAPPED:

At the Hopper end, or inlet, of the concrete pump where air is inadvertently sucked in by the pump.

1

When the pump is turned off and, by the way of gravity, air is allowed to migrate its way into the pipeline.

2

Using the air cuff shut off vale can present the latter of the 2 incidences regrading hose whip. By closing off the flow of concrete when the pump is turned off, the concrete in the later sections of them boom will not drain and allow air to be trapped inside the pipeline, therefor reducing the chance for hose whip.
